Freedom riders
by Hugh Wallis

(excerps by MC)

The "freedom riders" were a civil right movement that was pivotal. Some say its been going on for 30 years but it was going on in 1961 ( 50 years ago). ( Mr Wallis sang quite a few of their songs) .It was a peaceful demonstration. They were trained not to fidget nor to retaliate whatever happened. (CORE: congress of racial equality sponsered most of the bus rides)

Their goal was to end segregation like the white only waiting rooms. The Supreme court had held that racial segregation in public transportation was illegal because such segregation violated the Interstate Commerce Act, which broadly forbade discrimination in interstate passenger transportation, which included bus transportation.

The first freedom rides left Washington DC (led by the CORE director). When they got to Anniston, Alabama , they were attacked by a mob of Ku Klux Klan that forced the crippled bus to stop several miles outside of town and firebombed it. The mob jammed the doors so no-one could get out and they were going to let them burn to death . But then , the bomb opened a whole so the riders could get out. They did not fight back. The police were there but it had already been pre- arranged that they would not ido anything for 15 minutes . When the second bus arrived, The riders were beaten-up with baseball bats, brought to prison, the infamous Parchman Farm. They kept their spirit up in jail by singing freedom songs. Their music was in hudge part spiritual (Different religions). The guards were getting fed up and were trying to break their spirits buy taking away their mattress and tooth brush but the riders would keep on singing “There nothing you can do that will stop me” Well , I am on my way to the Freedom land”

Before that first ride in 1961, there was a lot of preparation. There was Irene Morgan in 1944 who was beaten and jailed for refusing to give up her seat on the bus . She was an activist all her life. She went all the way to the the U.S. Supreme court and she won.
She inspired the 1947 Journey of reconciliation where activists drove on buses.

In 1955, Rosa Park, called the “mother of the civil movement”refused to leave her seat, and others followed in her footsteps that year.
The Kennedys called for a "cooling off period" and condemned the Rides as unpatriotic because they embarrassed the nation on the world stage at the height of the Cold War .

But the freedom riders answered “no way, we have been cooling off for 300 years., if we cool off any more, we will be in deep freeze”

“Oh' freedom”

“ We shall not be moved”

“The battle goes on”

The riders were fighters fighting in a different way.

With all the broken dreams, it is still a beautifull world!

  •  Laura Secord and her heroic trek that saved the British and Canadian forces at the Battle of Beaver Dams during the War of 1812. Her journey along a 32 km (20 mile) treacherous route took more than 18 hours to complete. Fearing discovery by American patrols that were in possession of that part of Niagara, Laura Secord daringly made her way to DeCew house on the outskirts of Thorold. The dangers of such a journey were many - wolves, wildcats and rattlesnakes were common in the peninsula at this time, as were unfriendly Native forces. A woman walking alone toward enemy lines risked being arrested or even shot. Overcoming exceedingly hot temperatures and wild, unsettled land, Laura trekked through thick woods and across unbridged streams, tattering her slippers and leaving her feet blistered and bleeding.

At Beaverdams, Laura encountered Native forces who were allies of the British. Upon hearing her news, they accompanied her to DeCew house where she was able to deliver her vital message to Fitzgibbon. As a result, the Native forces, under the command of John Norton and Dominique Ducharme, ambushed the invading Americans and defeated them at the Battle of Beaverdams, June 24, 1813.

  • Susanna Wesley , although she never preached a sermon or published a book or founded a church, she is known as the Mother of Methodism.  In 19 years, she gave birth to nineteen children, nine of whom died as infants. The Wesley family was made famous by the two brothers, John and Charles, who worked together in the rise of Methodism in the British Isles during the 18th century. John Wesley was born June 28, 1703, died Mar. 2, 1791, and was the principal founder of the Methodist movement. His mother was important in his emotional and educational development.

Grand-mothers, living & in Memory (In music, a boy's memory of " Grandma's feather bed by Gordon)

  • Timothy's Lois: There is not a lot of information in Scripture regarding Lois and Eunice, but what we do know is an encouragement to all mothers who want to raise their children to love God.  Lois and Eunice were a mother/daughter team that raised up a man of God, Timothy, who was the Apostle Paul’s most trusted companion and disciple. It is only in Acts 1:6 and 2 Timothy 1:5 that we find record of these women, but what a strong commendation the Apostle Paul gives to them.  In 2 Timothy 1:5, the Paul writes: “ I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”  These women were responsible for passing their faith on to the next generation.
  • Ruth, great grandmother of David : the wealthy Boaz took note of the modest young woman who daily gleaned in his fields; and subsequently he learned that she was a relative through marriage. He pursued the course of the Jewish Law, and Ruth became his wife. Obed was the name of their son, Jesse was the name of his son, and David was the youngest of Jesse's sons. Thus Ruth the Gentile became identified with the royal family as an ancestor, and with King David's greatest Son and Lord--Jesus.
Mother's-in law :  (In music , "Make me feel your love" by Rob)
  • Naomi : Their husbands were dead. Naomi desired to return to her homeland. Ruth refused to return to her parents' home, pleading with Naomi to let her stick by her side.Elimelech, his wife Naomi, and their two sons Mahlon and Chilion forsook Bethlehem and sojourned to Moab. Elimelech died and his sons married Moab women. One was named Orpah and the other was Ruth. Eventually both Mahlon and Chilion died as well.  Naomi, Orpah and Ruth were now widows. For Naomi and her daughters-in-law, without having a man to provide for them, their future would be one of poverty and misery.Naomi urged both Orpah and Ruth to return to their father's households. Orpah, consented to return, Ruth, however, did not, "Do not urge me to leave you or turn back from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people and your God, my God....
